- Description/Excerpt: A 52-mile stretch of coastal waterways from central Palm Beach County through Broward to northern Miami-Dade County had the most boating accidents per square mile in Florida between 2002 and 2006.
A South Florida Sun-Sentinel analysis found that one in four of the 597 accidents in the corridor left someone injured, often the result of inattention, carelessness and violation of navigational rules.
South Florida's dense population and its high number of registered watercraft contribute to the high number of boating mishaps -- including 21 fatal accidents -- in the corridor analyzed by the newspaper. Florida was No. 1 in the nation for the number of boating registrations, according to a 2005 report from the National Marine Manufacturer's Association.
