- Description/Excerpt: Two dozen bridges in Orange County are flagged as "structurally deficient" by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Bridge Inventory. Sixteen have ratings equal to or worse than the Minneapolis bridge that collapsed last week.
Some of them are tiny bridges over creeks. Some of them are rarely used. But some still carry thousands of cars.
All of the deficient bridges are old, built before 1970. One of them, on Ortega Highway, was built in 1929.
They are owned by cities, by the county, by the California Department of Transportation and the Navy. Some owners said the deficiency ratings came as a surprise. On others, repair work is already scheduled or has been completed.
